White and red birds


Trying to identify birds you have seen can sometimes be a tricky thing. With this article on a list of 10 white and red birds, I will assist in the identification of birds you may have seen which are mainly white and red. There will be beautiful pictures of common and some not so common white and red birds, along with information on their sizes, where in the world you are likely to find them, habitat and diet. All of these things should help with identification.

Pompadour Cotinga

A very striking bird is the Pompadour Cotinga as shown above. Its intense crimson red plumage and white edged wings make it an attractive bird.

Mainly fruit, but is know to take insects

Red Crested Cardinal

This attractive male bird has a wonderful red face and throat and upper breast with a red crest as its name suggests. It has a white underbelly and neck and gray wings and tail.

Length; 19cms

Wingspan; 20-22 cms

Weight; 30-35g

Native to

This bird is native to South America, including Uruguay, Paraguay, South Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. They were introduced to the island of Hawaii. 

Habitat

Woodlands, savannahs, near water, shrubbery.  

Diet  

Seed an insects

Red headed weaver

Again as its name suggests this bird has a red head, it also has a red face, neck and breast. The underside is white and the back and wings are greeny yellow. It has a very distinct orange bill.

Length; 14-15 cms

Weight; 20g

Found on the African continent.

Habitat

Tropical forests, dry savannas, woodlands.  

 

Diet

Spiders, insects and fruits.

Ruby throated Hummingbird

His beautiful small bird is so colourful, it is on our list because of its red throat and white band. Its colours are iridescent and look like jewels in the sunshine.

Native to

Canada, North America, Central America

Habitat

Open areas, fields, parks, back yards

Diet  

Mainly Nectar, small insects and spiders 

Rose breasted grosbeak

This chunky bird has a rose coloured breast as its name suggests. With a black head and back, white underbelly and stripes on the wings and a large beak it is a striking looking bird.

Length: 18-21cm

Wingspan: 29-33 cm

Weight: 39-49g

Native to

Breeds North America, winters in Central, Southern America and Caribbean

Insects, berries, seed

European Goldfinch

The European Goldfinch as pictured above is a striking looking finch and very noticeable when in flight. Apart from the call as it’s flying it is the flash of colour which gets your attention. It is probably more known for its red face colouring, and white band behind that, which qualifies it for my list of white and red birds. Also good to know is  if you see one, there are likely to be a few more as they are known as social birds and tend to feed in flocks.

Europe, North Africa, Western Asia

Habitat

Forests, grasslands, open area, gardens, parks & meadows

Diet

Mainly seed, but will take insects during breeding

Red bellied woodpecker

Another attractive male woodpecker is the Red-Bellied woodpecker male as shown in the picture above. With a red-orange head and white face, throat and under parts.

Length; 23-27 cms

Wingspan; 38-46 cms

Weight; 72g

Native to

They are found in the eastern United States, as far north as Canada and south as far as Florida. 

Habitat

They like forests, woodlands and swampy woodlands further south.

Diet  

The diet of these birds includes fruit, seeds, nuts, insects, invertebrates, and again they will prey on other birds eggs and chicks, as well as frogs and small fish. (This list is not conclusive). Again they will store food, for hard times.  

Pileated woodpecker

Another North American woodpecker is the Pileated woodpecker. The largest of North American woodpeckers measuring around 40-48cms. As shown in the picture above, the male has a flaming red crest which is a set off against its white face with black stripes, and plumage.

Weight; 170-240g

Native to

This bird is found in Eastern North America, forests of Canada and parts of the pacific coast. 

Habitat

Mature forests and heavily wooded parkland.

Diet  

This bird likes to eat ants, preferably carpenter ants. They also add to their diet termites, caterpillars, grasshoppers, flies and cockroaches. They will also eat fruit and nuts and have been observed on bird feeders (this list is not conclusive)

Acorn woodpecker

As shown in the picture above this bird has a red head, almost like a red cap. It has a black area around its beak, followed by a band of white which does not cover the eyes. Another striking looking bird.

Wingspan; 35-43 cms

Weight; 85g

Native to 

This bird lives in North America, through to central America. Western Oregan, California down to Mexico.

Habitat

They prefer pine and oak woodlands and forests. 

Diet

As its name suggests these birds predominately feed on Acorns. They will start collecting the acorns and will stash away as reserves. They also feed on fruits, seeds, insects and have been known to take eggs from other birds nests.  

Red headed woodpecker

As seen in the picture above this is a striking male bird due to block colouring. They have a total covering of red on their head and white under belly and white on the wing ends.

Wingspan; 36cms

Weight; 72g

Native to 

You will find these in the continent of North America. Countries such as Southern Canada, the United states and Mexico are home to this beautiful bird. 

Habitat

They prefer open woodland or forest edges. 

Diet

They can catch insects on the wing, also they will feed on the ground, and forage in trees. Their diet can consist of insects, invertebrates, berries, fruit, nuts, seeds , earthworms and they will predate other nests and take eggs or chicks of other birds. (This list is not conclusive). They are also one of four North American woodpeckers who store food for the winter months.
